Here are some of our most often asked questions, with answers.
Where are you located?
We are located on Hatteras Island, in the village of Salvo. We are on the West side of NC Highway 12, just South of the "Sun Realty" office. If coming from the South, we are just North of the "Surf or Sound Realty" office.
Why can't I drive on the Dunes??
First and foremost, the dune line is THE defensive line to our cherished islands. They are all we have to protect us against rising flood waters when deadly hurricanes and harsh north east winds blow and threaten our land and lives. Second, the beaches are regulated by the National Park Service and it is strictly prohibited. Yes, it is ILLEGAL and subject to a $5,000 fine & up to six months in federal prison.
Will I get stuck? And if so, what do I do?
It is possible, but not probable. Our Econo 4x4s are chosen
specifically because they are so light weight and easy to maneuver
through the terrain. We know that many of our guests have never
driven off road and so we made sure we went with a vehicle that would be
easy for everyone. We chose the Geo / Chevy Trackers & Suzuki
Sidekicks & Samurais because they are notorious for ease of operation
and mobility.
In addition, we will give you a thorough binder with maps, tips for driving and step-by-step instructions to keep on hand while you are cruising; as well, we will go over everything verbally. If you prefer, we will happily arrange for a free lesson to ensure you are comfortable and able to have a good time. IN the very rare event you get stuck, you can call our office and we will assist you either by phone or we will come to your rescue with a tow, if necessary.

What happens if I book a reservation and it rains?
If it is raining when you arrive for your pick-up, we will assess the situation and re-schedule if necessary / possible. If you cancel a reservation due to the fact that it may rain, a cancellation fee will still apply. Keep in mind; often, the weather report is incorrect and sometimes it is even raining on one side of the street and not the other. Rain cells pop up and move quickly around here, often resulting in a minimal shower that usually feels quite refreshing. So, try to hold out and you will more times than not, be surprised and the sun will shine.
Can I bring a cooler?
Yes, we recommend bringing whatever gear you may need, ESPECIALLY: sun block, sunglasses, towels, water, snacks, etc. Storage space is limited, but we do have racks you can rent to put on the back if you are planning to take large coolers, chairs, umbrellas, etc.
Items NOT permitted in vehicles are as follows: Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, fireworks, and firearms.
*Don't forget your camera; you will want to make sure you get pictures of your adventure. Please keep in mind most vehicles are convertible, so although they lock (exception of Tub Buggies), they are easy to get into; therefore, we suggest bringing a back pack or bag of sorts to carry your valuables in, if you plan to be away from the vehicle.
Can our dog ride in the vehicle?
By all means!!! Yes, dogs are welcome; however, if your dog is likely to jump from the vehicle, we do not recommend bringing him/her for a tub buggy ride. And, of course, if any damage is caused by your pet, you will be held responsible (i.e. torn seats, "potty spots", chewed up parts, etc.) Also, if your dog sheds excessively you will be required to clean it yourself or pay an extra minimal fee.
Are there any hidden fees?
Minor charges may apply if a vehicle is returned excessively dirty (lots of fur, piles of sand, and/or a lot of garbage). Sales tax applies to all rentals and merchandise. There is a 2% processing fee for all credit card purchases (does not apply to security deposits).
*Any breach of contract or damages to the vehicle will result in a loss of deposit and/or additional fees.
